Is it safe to Take Melanin While Pregnant?

Mandy, Midwife at The Baby Academy

Melatonin is quickly becoming the go-to supplement for people who want to sleep better. However, research is unclear about whether melatonin is actually safe to take while pregnant.

Your body produces its own melatonin all the time- it’s what keeps your body clock on a 24-hour cycle. But just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s 100% safe. The human brain produces DMT- and we don’t take that as a licence to ingest copious amounts of the drug.

Melatonin is generally considered a safe short-term sleep aid for the general public. But it has not been proven safe for pregnant women. Additionally, there is no standard dosage, which makes it tricky to buy off the shelf and take on your own.

One animal study found that melatonin supplementation during pregnancy negatively impacted maternal weight, baby birth weight, and baby mortality.

Suffice it to say, you should check with your doctor before supplementing with Melatonin during pregnancy.
